My husband and I recently spent an afternoon in downtown Cleveland. We started with a tour of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame then headed over to the Great Lakes Brewing Company (GLBC) Brewpub for dinner.
For those with gluten and dairy sensitivities or who opt not to eat meat, “bar-fare” might sound like a set up for disappointment. Instead, I was intrigued after viewing their online menu as they prominently call out options for Gluten Free, Vegetarian, and Vegan (which would answer to a diner’s concerns with dairy). This simple gesture takes a lot of the guess work out of ordering and demonstrates that they are prepared for and receptive to adjustments. The Brewpub is also very welcoming to families with a kid’s menu to prove it, though it doesn’t feature the same dietary considerations.
Founded in 1988, GLBC was the first microbrewery and brewpub in Ohio. It is located around the corner from the Ohio City Farm, partners of GLBC, and near the West Side Market, where some of their suppliers reside. This proximity emphasizes their commitment to supporting seasonal and local flavors on their menu.
You don’t have to be exclusively a beer lover to imbibe at GLBC as, in addition to copious amounts of fresh crafted beers on tap, there are plenty of other ways to whet one’s whistle. Their signature cocktails offer non-alcoholic versions - a nice touch - not to mention a basic wine list and a limited, rotating selection of hard cider. Even kids have a special drink menu that includes the classic Shirley Temple. By the way, I have it on good authority that the Apple Pie Old Fashioned is delicious!
Familial experience combined with a long-standing run at GLBC equipped our primary server to understand well dietary restrictions and guide our selections. I settled on a build-your-own burger complete with a gluten free bun (that actually tasted good!). Service was well paced and attentive. We enjoyed an insightful parting exchange about the history of the brewery and events in the area. The support staff was efficient and kept everything running smoothly!
There truly is something for everyone on the menu and the great service and historic backdrop makes for an all-around pleasing encounter. Be prepared, though…the value to dollar on some items is low. Not surprising with inflated prices everywhere but for a group or family, it may influence how you order.
